“Keeping in Reel” is a riverfront cottage where all of you can chill on the porch spanning the length of the house and overlooking the New River. Covered porch with plenty of seating invites you to sit a spell and take in the marvelous mountain scenery or head down the steps to the river. Spend your evening around the fire pit with your family and friends – remember to bring your fixings for S'mores!
Keeping it Reel's bright interior of will delight you. Reflected light from the beautiful hardwood floors brings the sunshine in. The living room is spacious and comfortably seats a small crowd around the wood-burning fireplace and a large screen TV perfect for enjoying a movie after a day of exploring.
The kitchen has plenty of counter space, plus island bar seating for three people. You'll find everything you need in this vaulted room plus including a dining table for 6 with a view of the river.
On the main floor are 3 bedrooms which share a large full bath with double sinks. One bedroom has a comfy king, and with queen-size beds in the other two.
Downstairs, there's a game room with a foos ball table and a twin daybed for overflow sleeping, as well as another TV. There's also a full bath and you'll be grateful for the laundry room, if your stay is long enough to require a load or two. Walk out from here to the expansive lawn which meets up with the river.
Whether you are up for adventure or you want to relax, you can do both at Keeping it Reel.
Because it's right on the line between Ashe and Alleghany Counties, where the river divides them. You are in luck if getting on the river is on your to do list. There are 2 outfitters within half a mile of the house.
It's an equal 25 minute drive to either West Jefferson or Sparta, so ideally located to explore some gorgeous mountain terrain. In Sparta, with its main intersection perched on a hill, stop in for coffee at Becca's Backwoods Bean Coffee Shop. Once fueled, you can shop for pottery, clothes, antiques and more. The drive from the cabin to town is gorgeous, with long range views from rolling hillsides. Like wine? Then head to Thistle Meadow Winery in nearby Laurel Springs.
In West Jefferson, stop in to Bohemia for your caffeine fix, and then explore even more shops, galleries, antiques and dining, as well as several interesting festivals – Christmas in July, Old Time Antiques Fair, the On the Same Page Literary Festival, the Stomp 'n Brew beer festival (a fundraiser) and more. Speaking of beer, you've got two local breweries in town, Boondocks and New River Brewing, both of which serve excellent food. And if you'd like to try something special, Ashe County is home to the Molley Chomper Hard Cider Mill (in Lansing) but you can find it served at some of our local establishments, including Carolina Country Wines, which serves by the glass or does tastings, and sells a great variety of wine, cider and beer.
If you want some nature, the cottage is just 34 minutes to Grayson Highlands State Park, where wild ponies roam. If you're lucky to get there in late spring/early summer, you might get to meet the new foals. In the park, make sure to visit the old homestead, and the local history museum.
Want views without hiking? Head to Mt. Jefferson State Natural Area, just outside West Jefferson. You can to the scenic pull off and take in the majesty of our mountains without getting out of the car. But if you want to identify what you're seeing, there's a great chart with the names of our hills. There are hiking trails, and a wonderful viewing point farther up, plus a picnic shelter above that.
